10 Most Popular Tourist Destinations In Canada Secret Flight Club Data Report

Canada is a country where the scenery can change dramatically from one destination to the next. One trip might mean skyscrapers, restaurants and major sporting events, while another could involve mountain trails, historic streets or dramatic coastal views.

At Secret Flight Club, we analysed tourism demand, climate comfort, hotel affordability and safety data to identify the 10 Most Popular Tourist Destinations In Canada for 2026.

Whether you are looking for a lively city break, a scenic escape or somewhere with plenty to see and do, this guide looks at the numbers behind Canada's most appealing destinations.

How We Determined Our List

To build our ranking, we analysed a combination of tourism demand, affordability, climate consistency and safety indicators from nationally recognised datasets. Sources include:

We prioritised destinations that consistently attract large numbers of visitors, have strong tourism infrastructure, offer a broad choice of attractions and accommodation, and provide favourable conditions for travellers.

Hotel costs reflect average nightly standard room rates based on available hotel performance data. Crime rates are shown per 100,000 residents using the latest comparable Statistics Canada figures. Temperature figures reflect annual average temperatures from Canadian Climate Normals.

Key Findings

After analysing Canada's leading tourism destinations, several clear patterns emerged.

Toronto takes the top position, with the city welcoming a record 28.2 million visitors in 2025. Its huge range of restaurants, attractions, events and neighbourhoods helps it maintain its position as Canada's leading tourism destination.

Vancouver also performs exceptionally well, combining a major international city with beaches, mountains and easy access to outdoor activities. It also recorded the highest hotel average daily rate among Canada's major hotel markets in 2025, showing just how strong demand remains.

Montreal and Quebec City stand out for travellers looking for history, food and European style architecture, while Calgary and Banff provide a very different experience with the Rocky Mountains close at hand.

One of the biggest differences between the destinations is climate. Vancouver and Victoria have notably mild annual averages, while cities such as Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City experience much colder winters. This makes the time of year you visit particularly important when planning a Canadian holiday.

10 Most Popular Tourist Destinations In Canada

1. Toronto

Average Temperature: 9.7°C
Average Hotel Cost: CAD 245
Crime Rate: ~4,177 per 100,000

Toronto is Canada's leading tourism destination and attracted a record 28.2 million visitors in 2025. The city offers an enormous variety of experiences, from the CN Tower and waterfront to museums, sporting events, shopping and some of the country's best known restaurants.

Its multicultural character is one of its biggest strengths. Different neighbourhoods offer completely different atmospheres, meaning visitors can spend a morning exploring Kensington Market, an afternoon around the waterfront and an evening enjoying the city's food scene.

Hotel prices are relatively high, but that reflects the city's huge visitor demand. Toronto remains particularly strong for travellers who want plenty happening throughout their stay.

2. Vancouver

Average Temperature: 11.4°C
Average Hotel Cost: CAD 284
Crime Rate: ~5,438 per 100,000

Vancouver combines the attractions of a major Canadian city with a spectacular natural setting. The mountains rise behind the skyline, while Stanley Park, the waterfront and nearby beaches provide plenty of opportunities to escape the urban centre.

The city's mild climate is a major advantage. The 1991 to 2020 Canadian Climate Normals put Vancouver's annual average temperature at 11.4°C, one of the highest among Canada's major destinations.

Vancouver also recorded Canada's highest average daily hotel rate among major markets in 2025 at CAD 284.44. Despite the higher accommodation cost, its combination of scenery, culture and international accessibility keeps visitor demand strong.

3. Montreal

Average Temperature: 7°C
Average Hotel Cost: CAD 234
Crime Rate: ~3,674 per 100,000

Montreal has a character all of its own. French and Canadian influences come together across the city's historic streets, cafes, restaurants and lively cultural scene.

Old Montreal is a favourite with visitors and it is easy to see why once you start walking around. The old stone buildings and winding streets have a completely different atmosphere from the newer parts of the city. Montreal is also a great place to eat, whether you fancy trying a classic Quebec dish, grabbing something casual or sitting down for an international meal.

It can also be a more manageable choice for your budget than Toronto or Vancouver. Hotel rooms averaged around CAD 234.04 a night in 2025 and Montreal's crime rate in 2024 was lower than the Canadian average.

4. Calgary

Average Temperature: 4.5°C
Average Hotel Cost: CAD 194
Crime Rate: ~4,796 per 100,000

Calgary is the gateway to some of Canada's most spectacular scenery. The city itself has a lively downtown, excellent restaurants and a strong events calendar, but its proximity to the Rocky Mountains is what makes it especially attractive to visitors.

Banff and Lake Louise can be reached from Calgary, making the city a popular base for travellers wanting to combine urban attractions with mountain adventures.

Calgary also offers comparatively reasonable accommodation costs. Its 2025 hotel market showed strong performance, while the city's crime rate fell by 14% compared with 2023.

5. Quebec City

Average Temperature: 5.1°C
Average Hotel Cost: CAD 190
Crime Rate: ~3,595 per 100,000

Quebec City feels unlike almost anywhere else in Canada. The historic centre, old stone buildings and fortified walls give the city a distinctly European atmosphere.

The Old Quebec area is the obvious starting point, but the destination offers much more than historic sightseeing. Visitors can enjoy restaurants, museums, festivals and the St Lawrence River, while the city becomes particularly atmospheric during the colder months.

Quebec City also scores well for safety. Statistics Canada's 2024 figures put its crime rate at around 3,595 incidents per 100,000 people, considerably below Canada's national rate of 5,672.

6. Ottawa

Average Temperature: 6.5°C
Average Hotel Cost: CAD 206
Crime Rate: ~4,298 per 100,000

As Canada's capital, Ottawa has a strong concentration of museums, galleries, historic buildings and national attractions. Parliament Hill is the obvious landmark, while the Rideau Canal provides a different experience depending on the season.

The city has also become increasingly appealing for domestic travellers, helped by festivals, sporting events and a recovering conference market. Hotel performance improved in 2025, with the average daily rate rising to around CAD 205.56.

Ottawa is also one of the safer large Canadian destinations in our analysis, with a 2024 crime rate below the national average.

7. Victoria

Average Temperature: 11°C
Average Hotel Cost: CAD 220
Crime Rate: ~5,283 per 100,000

Victoria offers a slower pace than Canada's largest cities. Located on Vancouver Island, the destination is known for its harbour, historic architecture, gardens and attractive coastal setting.

Its climate is one of its strongest selling points. Victoria has an annual average temperature of around 11°C, making it one of the mildest destinations in Canada. Winters are considerably less severe than in many of the country's major cities.

The city is a natural choice for travellers who want scenery and outdoor experiences without giving up good restaurants, museums and comfortable city accommodation.

8. Niagara Falls

Average Temperature: 9.7°C
Average Hotel Cost: CAD 190
Crime Rate: ~4,241 per 100,000

Niagara Falls is perhaps the most instantly recognisable natural attraction on this list. The enormous Horseshoe Falls provide the main reason to visit, but the wider destination offers boat trips, viewpoints, gardens, restaurants and plenty of family entertainment.

The area attracts visitors from both Canada and overseas, making it one of the country's most established tourist destinations. The nearby Niagara wine region also gives adults a reason to stay longer rather than treating the falls as a quick day trip.

The St Catharines and Niagara metropolitan area recorded a 2024 crime rate of around 4,241 per 100,000 residents, while hotel prices remain relatively accessible compared with Vancouver and Toronto.

9. Halifax

Average Temperature: 6.9°C
Average Hotel Cost: CAD 205
Crime Rate: ~6,020 per 100,000

Halifax has a much more laid back feel than some of Canada's larger cities. Much of the action centres around the harbour, where you will find places to eat, museums, old buildings and plenty of spots to simply sit and watch the boats go by.

It is also a good choice if you want to see more of Nova Scotia during the same trip. You can use Halifax as a base and head out towards the coast, stopping at small seaside towns, beaches and scenic viewpoints along the way.

The weather is one thing worth keeping in mind when planning your visit. Halifax has an average yearly temperature of about 6.9°C, so summers are generally the most comfortable time to explore the city. It is also when hotels tend to be busiest, so booking ahead can be worthwhile.

10. Edmonton

Average Temperature: 4.2°C
Average Hotel Cost: CAD 153
Crime Rate: ~7,108 per 100,000

Edmonton rounds out our list with a particularly strong combination of attractions and affordability. The city has an extensive events calendar, a growing food scene and attractions that make it appealing to families and couples alike.

It is also a useful base for exploring Alberta, with outdoor experiences available beyond the city itself. For visitors concerned about accommodation costs, Edmonton stands out from the other destinations on this list.

Explore Edmonton reported an average hotel daily rate of CAD 153 for 2025, considerably below Canada's national average of CAD 216.10. The city's airport also handled 8.14 million passengers during the year, demonstrating the scale of its transport infrastructure.
