What to Do When You Don’t Love a Destination
23 July 2025

Okay we love travel but let's be real. Not every trip is a perfect match. Sometimes you arrive in a place and the spark just isn’t there. Maybe the city is too loud, the landscape not as romantic as Instagram promised, or the energy simply doesn’t vibe with yours. It happens. And when it does, it doesn’t mean the trip is a failure.
Here’s what to do when you don’t love a destination, but still want to make the most of your time there.
1. Pause Before You Judge
First impressions can be misleading. Jet lag, stress, or bad weather can colour your experience. Give it at least 24 hours before deciding the place isn’t for you. Sometimes, all it takes is one good coffee or a quiet street to shift your mood.
2. Change the Scale
If the city feels overwhelming, zoom in. Focus on a single neighbourhood. If it feels boring, zoom out, take a bus to the edge of town or find a regional day trip. Playing with scale often changes perspective.
3. Stop Trying to Force the Fun
You don’t have to see all the “must-see” attractions, especially if they aren’t speaking to you. Give yourself permission to do what you want to do, not what you think you should. Sit in a park. Read. Take an aimless walk. Or do absolutely nothing for an afternoon.
4. Ask a Local What They Love
Ask someone who lives there what they enjoy most. You might discover a café with live jazz, a local food market, or a quiet hilltop view that doesn’t appear on any top ten list. Locals often love their cities in ways that guidebooks can’t explain.
5. Change the Story
Reframe the experience. Not every trip has to be life-changing. Some are slow. Some are weird. Some just give you a funny story to tell. A "meh" destination might teach you something about what you value in travel.
6. Remember: You Can Leave
If you really, truly dislike the place, there’s no shame in changing plans. Look at nearby towns or flights to somewhere else. One of the best things about modern travel? Flexibility. You’re not stuck.
7. Don’t Feel Guilty
There’s no travel badge for loving every destination. You’re allowed to feel neutral, disappointed, or even irritated. It doesn’t make you ungrateful. It makes you honest.
Every Trip Has Value
Even if you don’t fall in love with the destination, you can still learn something. About yourself, about the world, about what kind of traveller you are. And sometimes, that’s more valuable than the perfect photo or postcard-worthy sunset.
So if you find yourself in a place that just doesn’t click - just breathe. Adjust. And remember: the trip isn’t over.
Luckily, if you booked with Secret Flight Club, at least you didn’t spend a fortune getting there. And the good news? The next great deal is already on its way.
